Dr Stephen J Newhouse sjnewhouse

Dr Steve Newhouse studied Molecular Biology at Liverpool then went on to complete a PhD in Genetics at Queen Mary University of London. He has extensive experience the design and analysis of genomic data focusing on complex disease genetics. During his Phd developed an interest in bioinformatics and its application to human disease and translational research ? ?integrative translational ?omics?, specifically in the challenge of integrating and analysing multiple sources of complex data (genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and basic clinical and demographic) data for biomarker discovery, novel therapeutic targets and a better understanding of human disease. Dr Newhouse has a wide range of experience in the analysis of expression and SNP arrays, next generation sequencing data and network/pathway analyses. His work has required the extensive use of multiple bioinformatic and biostatistical approaches for the creation and implementation of pipelines for mixed ?omic data analysis and data integration and visualization. As senior Bioinformatician at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health Bioinformatics core, King?s College London, he currently collaborates with national and international scientists and clinicians across academia and industry, where current research is focused on translational bioinformatics and the genetics of complex neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. We complement the overall strategy of the BRC-MH through the integration of rich clinical data from patient records with large variable 'omic data sets; including transcriptomic, genomic (e.g. common and rare SNPs and CNVs), epigenetic, proteomic and neuroimaging, with the aim of discovering and developing biomarkers of diagnosis, prognosis, rate of progression of disease and treatment response.
