Emily R. Smith is a program officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, WA. Her portfolio focuses on new solutions in nutrition as part of the Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Discovery and Tools program strategy.
Dr. Smith is an epidemiologist whose research has focused on generating, analyzing, and translating data to improve maternal and child health and nutrition in low- and middle-income countries. Prior to joining BMGF, she worked as a researcher at Harvard and Emory Universities. She has implemented clinic- and population-based randomized control trials to evaluate the efficacy of nutrition and health interventions in Tanzania, Bolivia, Rwanda, and the United States.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of the Population and Reproductive Health doctoral program in the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, MA. She completed her Master of Public Health in Global Environmental Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and she received a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University in Anthropology and International Studies.
